Generally, the majority of electrical devices are made up by a mechanical part and an electronic part. This electrical part consists in printedcircuit boards, where the different components are connected by means of copper pathways on a board made of insulating material.
The first step to obtain one of theseprinted circuit boards(PCBs) is to design it using one of the specific tools on the market. One of the most popular ones is OrCAD.
OrCAD is the most powerful and intuitive tool to design printed circuit boards. The demo version offers you the possibility to evaluate the following functions: OrCADCapture, OrCADCapture CIS Option, PSpice A/D, PSpice A/A, OrCADPCB Editor and SPECCTRA.
The basic steps that have to be taken to designa printed circuit board with OrCAD are:
1. Design the circuit by creating the schematic in the 'Capture' module.
2. Generate the circuit's netlist.
3. Import the netlist to 'LayoutPlus'.
4. Place the components and trace the pathways.
5. Generate the files of its design.
Once the design of the copper pathways on the board has been finished, and we have simulated the behavior of the design, the next step will be to design the PCB from an insulating material, like for example a photosensitive fiberglass board.
This download requires a ZIP compatible compressor. This program also requires that you have .NET Framework 2.0 or above installed. It's necessary to register to download this application. Since it's a trial version, the size and the complexity of the designs are limited.

  • Uninstall the previous version of License Manager — installation of OrCAD 17.4 products requires the updated License Manager. Be sure to uninstall License Manager before you begin installation of the update.
  • Save your license file EMA previously forwarded your license file to you as an email attachment when your request for OrCAD licensing was approved. You may have optionally received a control file that enables you to selectively install a subset of OrCAD products. If so, also save that control file.
  • Identify the Hostname of your server or local workstation – You need to verify the hostname of the server or workstation where your License Manager is installed. You can identify this by entering Hostname into a Command Prompt window.
  • Verify you have a USB port available (optional) – a USB port is necessary only if you plan to use a USB Flex ID key (dongle) for your product license and locking method.
  • Temporarily disable your security software – active security software may interfere with the installation files; it is recommended you disable security software before installation.
  • Verify you have Administrative rights – Admin rights are needed to conduct the installation of License Manager and recommended for the installation of OrCAD software products.

    1. Installation Directory: When you accept the default directory suggested, the installation is completed without overwriting the previous version. This permits you to use the Switch Release utility after installation is complete to open a previous software version. Acceptance of the suggested installation directory facilitates troubleshooting that may occur at a future time.
    2. Working/Home directory: The Working Directory is separate from the Installation Directory. It is a location where projects and libraries are stored. This folder is left untouched during uninstallation. You can accept the suggested working directory or specify an alternate location.
  6. (Optional step) Click the Custom Installation button if you want to install only the specific OrCAD products you are licensed to access. By default, all OrCAD products are installed with only the products specifically licensed to you activated. This custom installation improves the efficient use of your computer resources because the products that lack licensing are excluded from the installation.
When you install the custom installation, you receive a prompt asking for the path to your control file. The control file is an EMA provided file that enables you to install only the products for which you have a license.
  7. Click Next to continue.
  8. (Optional Step) If you are installing Capture CIS you may be asked to select the appropriate Footprint Viewer for Capture CIS. PCB Editor is recommended. Your selection may be edited at a future time if necessary. Accept the default directory for the libraries and click Next.
  9. Select a licensing option to specify the “Input License Details.” You may choose to either connect to an existing license server or install a new license server, (recommended selection).
    1. Install License Server— (Default Selection) When you select this option, the updated License Manager is installed before your OrCAD 17.4 products are automatically installed.
      1. Click the Ellipsis button (three dots) and browse to select the path to your license file. This is the license file verified in Preparing for Installation.
      2. If your are using a dongle provided by EMA to support licensing, verify your dongle is plugged into your USB drive. Use of the dongle is optional. If you receive an error message regarding your dongle, see the instructions in Troubleshooting Dongle Licensing Issues.
    2. Connect to Existing Server — When you select this option rather than the recommended default option, you are prompted to set the CDS_LIC_FILE environment variable. Enter the address of the license server. The address may be 5280@hostname for example.
  10. Click the Install button.
The licensing settings you selected are applied. If you chose to install License Manager, the installation of License Manager begins. This may take a few minutes to complete.
The installation of your OrCAD 17.4 products automatically begins after your licensing settings are applied. The status bar in the lower part of the window indicates the progress of your installation.
  11. Click the Finish button.
