Connect your Zoom H4n to the external power supply (will also work with batteries). Connect the Mini USB cable to the input on the left side of the recorder, and then to your computer. 0I’ve had the Zoom H4n for close to a year now, and I’ve been incredibly happy with it on so many levels.
As a portable recorder, it works incredibly well. The built-in microphones are solid and incredibly convenient. The phantom power and line-in inputs might not be what you find in devices that cost three or more times its price.. but I’d peg them at being pretty close. I made some tests against the Apogee Duet, and while it placed behind it, it was a close second.
The H4n also serves as a USB audio interface for both the PC and the Mac. I’ve used it on both platforms, and in terms of driver and system support it’s been consistently top notch.
So what was my problem? On my PC, when I would use the device as an audio interface, I’d get a rather high pitch whine in my monitors which I hadn’t experienced on my battery-powered MacBook Pro. I tried disconnecting other devices, moving cables all over and in different configurations, but nothing seemed to do the trick. I searched the Googles tirelessly, trying to find other people with the same problem.
Eventually, I found out the solution: power up the device on battery/AC power before connecting the USB cable. Then, once the device is powered up, go through the menu items and connect the cable up to the system. No noise, no problems.
Previously, I was relying on the USB power of the system to run the device as an audio interface. In theory, this works rather well: connect the cable when the H4n is off, and it starts up, offering you USB connection options. When you disconnect the device, the H4n immediately shuts off. It seems as though the fundamental problem is that the USB power is a bit dirty; or, at the very least, is injecting some kind of noise into the system.
It is a bit more work to make sure that I don’t leave the H4n on after I shut the computer down, etc., though the benefits are well worth it. In certain cases, the high pitched sound may not be all that apparent; and in others, it may disappear entirely. My feeling is that the laptop, being battery powered, did not have the same kind of electrical signals running through the system, thereby making the USB power a bit more clean.
In any case, I hope this tip helps some other people; it certainly caused me some trouble and aggravation before I got it solved.
How to fix the mic problem (no sound recorded) when you connect the Zoom H4n recorder to a PC USB slot?
You can use the Zoom H4n as a high quality mic for your video recordings that gets recorded straight to your PC/Laptop. You need to turn on the Audio Interface option to do so.
The problem that occurred with me is because the device and the PC had different kilohertz settings. My device was set to 48 kilohertz while my laptop was set to 44 khz.

it says CD is 44 kilohertz and DVD

sure if I can tell the difference
between 44 and 48 kilohertz but I just
wanted to make sure I used a higher
quality recording or the higher quality
option and when I plugged in the zoom
into the USB and the device driver
installed fine everything looked good
but I had a problem I could not record
my voice my laptop could not hear the
device the microphone wasn't working
when it was set to record with the zoom
so it puzzled me it took me a while it
then I finally found an answer so what
you do if you have this problem is make
sure your zoom is operating at the same
kilohertz as your laptop since I set my
zoom to 48 kilohertz I needed to go to
the control panel of my laptop and
adjust that the kilohertz
okay so I'll show you how to do that
right now just right-click your speaker
icon down here
and go to open sound settings you can
also reach that through the windows
search feature here and from here go to
go to the sound control panel you could
type in sound control panel here as well
and okay go to recording and here the
microphone the microphone was a problem
the playback and headphones was fine but
the recording was not happening so this
is where you go it says to hear because
I plugged it into two different USB
ports in my laptop and this is the
second one they operate separately
whenever you plug in the zoom in to one
USB and another USB on your laptop they
operate slightly the same thing they
come with different settings so this is
for the port two USB h4 double click
that and then go to advanced and this is
where you can control it so so I'm set
to two channel 16 bit 48 kilohertz DVD
quality okay the other option is to
channel 16 bit 44 Hertz CD quality that
was a problem when these are not
matching the two can't talk to each
other in terms of the microphone the
headphones can still work so just make
sure if you have your zoom set to 44
kilohertz then this should be set to 44
kilohertz since myung is at 48 kilohertz
and DVD quality so I had to set this
through 48 kilohertz and then everything
worked fine and there was no problem
after that okay and that's it and I hope
that fixes your problem by the way the
zoom h4n has been discontinued my device
is probably about eight years old and
it's still working well it's a really
good high quality recording piece of
device really solid construction and
it's lasted all these years it's still
working no need to replace it right now
but it's discontinued so if you wanted
